16+1 Rules of Social Media Optimization (SMO)
Rohit Bhargava began making the list of rules of site optimization for web2.0 societies. Other researchers continue his work.
Start learning these rules from Rohit’s entry and make your way in del.icio.us with tag “socialmediaoptimization“.
Couples of my notes to those rules:
Rule 1:
or even simply aggregating content that exists elsewhere into a useful format
It’s dubios recommendation that can be interpreted as the call to splogs’ creating.
Rule 2:
Adding content features like quick buttons to “add to del.icio.us” are one way to make the process of tagging pages easier… and making sure to tag our pages first on popular social bookmarking sites
Add only main resources’ buttons (like digg, reddit, del.icio.us, etc), don’t make a button farm in header or footer of your article.
making sure pages include … suggested notes for a link (which come up automatically when you go to tag a site)
No many of people know that it’s possible to suggest your own tags in del.icio.us placing them in parameter “&tags=”. In other services such options can exist, too.
Rule 3:
listing recent linking blogs on your site provides the reward of visibility for those who link to you
With what aim, I wonder. Don’t do it automatically caring of security. These links can be used by SE-spammers. If you want to encourage someone, place links manually.
Rule 17, mine:
Make your content the most comprehensible. If it’s a text, write it in the form of list. If it’s screenshot series, make it over in screencast with voice comments. If you teach others to hummer in nails, do a short video instead of 20 photos and writing text.

[...] Anyway, over the past three weeks, the SMO list has grown to 16 (or maybe 17, I’m not certain), and now there are rules for adding a rule to the list. I haven’t scratched beyond the surface of these rules yet, but I’ll delve in shortly and will be looking for ways to make my site more social media optimizationally acceptable. [...]
